Character development is much more than traits – It is the story of your character. For example, a fictional character can be a person who is a good person, a bad person, or a good person with bad traits or qualities. When most writers refer to ‘Characters’, they are actually referring to their traits, rather than their actions. Instead, characters should be seen as people – just like you, your friends, your family and anyone else around you. This is a scary way of thinking, as it can lead to the creation of dull or typical characters in stories. When most people think of ‘Characters’ in stories they think of common stereotypes and have preconceptions of what a person is or can be. But to create good characters, writers need to start with character development before writing their story. People can relate to good characters and understand the world they live in. They make choices, they struggle, they grow and they change. Characters are at the heart of any story.
